TA has supported Hong Kong Polytechnic University to redesign its HVAC-system. Hong Kong Polytechnic University also known as Hong Kong Polytechnic got full university status in 1994. Over the years more than 250.000 students have graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic..
Due to the Hong Kong government proposal that the indoor temperature should not be lower than 25,5°C the Hong Kong Polytechnic university started to rebuild the HVAC system. To maintain a comfortable indoor climate while minimizing energy consumption it is vital to eliminate the temperature fluctuations in the building. When temperatures fluctuate, people often try to compensate for the discomfort by resetting room thermostats. This changes the average temperature in the whole building. Hong Kong Polytechnic University required a reliable partner in design, installation and commissioning to ensure a solution that will maintain the required temperatures more accurately.
Analysis showed that the system was not balanced. In an unbalanced system, terminals close to the pump will be in overflow while terminals far away from the pump are in underflow. This reduces comfort and increases operating costs. TA conducted several balancing seminars and worked closely together with the customer to redesign the hydronic system. TA’s balancing valves and differential pressure controllers were installed to meet the requirements of the variable flow system. TA also supported Hong Kong Polytechnic University with the balancing job. A complete analysis of the hydronic system was obtained by measuring the differential pressure, the flow and the temperature.Balancing enhances comfort while minimizing the energy consumption by restricting the flow in favoured circuits so that all circuit are able to receive the design flow. For Hong Kong Polytechnic University this means that the cooling system is controllable and enables to keep the required temperature maintained everywhere inside the building. Without the temperature fluctuations the indoor climate is more comfortable and the energy consumption is considerably lower due to a higher average temperature.Read the pdf article
